Why We Ditched Scented Deodorants (and What You Can Use Instead)
I’ll be honest—I rarely wear deodorant. And not because I don’t care how I smell… but because once you learn what’s actually in most commercial deodorants and body sprays, it’s hard to un-know it.
The word “fragrance” or “parfum” on a label might seem harmless. But behind that one word could be a cocktail of hundreds of synthetic chemicals, none of which are required to be disclosed to you. And many of them? They’re toxic.
What does “Fragrance” Really Mean?
When you see fragrance or parfum on a label, it’s not just one ingredient—it’s a proprietary blend protected under trade secret laws. That means companies can legally hide a lot of nasty ingredients, like:
- Phthalates (linked to hormone disruption and infertility)
- Synthetic musks (build up in our bodies and breastmilk)
- Allergens, neurotoxins, and skin irritants
Even “unscented” doesn’t always mean what you think—it can still contain masking fragrances
The Problem with Scented Deodorants & Body Sprays
Most commercial deodorants and body sprays are:
- Loaded with synthetic fragrances
- Made with aluminum (which blocks sweat but may affect hormone health)
- Blended with preservatives like BHT and parabens
- Packaged in plastic that may leach BPA, BPS or BPF (yep, even your armpits aren’t safe)
And for those with sensitive skin or autoimmune issues, these ingredients can trigger everything from rashes to fatigue
So… What Do You Do Instead?
Let’s be real—not everyone can (or wants to) skip deodorant entirely. And that’s okay. Here are better alternatives I recommend—gentle, effective, and made without the junk.
NOTE: Not all deodorants will work for every person. What can work for me, may not work for you. My sister switched over to a very “crunchy” deodorant and her skin broke out in a bad way.
1. Natural Deodorants That Actually Work
- Look for ones made with magnesium, arrowroot powder, zinc, or baking soda (if your skin can tolerate it)
- Choose essential oil scented, or better yet—unscented and essential-oil optional
- Brands I trust? There are a few that you can try. I ditched deodorant years ago, but there are some days when you just need a little something. Primal Pit Paste is my #1 go-to.
2. Herbal Armpit Tonics & Sprays
- Witch hazel, magnesium oil, and a touch of tea tree or lavender
- Great for hot days or post-workout refreshers
- You can DIY it—or yes, I may just make my own😉
3. Amber Butter or Tallow Balm
- A whisper of scent from real ingredients, like amber resin, coconut oil, or beeswax
- Nourishes skin without clogging it
- Bonus: these make great “solid perfumes” for people sensitive to scent but who still want a little something
Embracing Your Body’s Natural Scent (It’s Not Gross)
Sweat isn’t the enemy. It’s your body’s natural cooling and detox system. The more we clean up our diets, our homes, and our products, the less “funk” we actually produce.
Our culture has trained us to mask everything, but there’s power in embracing the way your body actually works.
In Summary
Fragrance isn’t just a preference—it’s a health decision. When you see “parfum” on a label, know that it’s hiding more than you’d expect. Start small, switch what you can, and listen to your body.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being intentional.
